Vascular Plant Red List for Iceland

Latest version published by Icelandic Institute of Natural History on Jun 26, 2020 Icelandic Institute of Natural History

In Iceland, the first red list of vascular plants was compiled in 1996 (Náttúrufræðistofnun 1996), and then updated in 2008. The present edition of the Vascular Plant Red List for Iceland constitutes the second update of the list from 1996 and it is based on refined data on species distribution, new information on species biology and ecology as well as new observations made during monitoring activities by the Icelandic Institute of Natural History. The Vascular Plant Red List for Iceland reviews the status of plant species according to IUCN red listing guidelines. It was compiled in order to identify species that are threatened with extinction in Iceland and thus facilitate conservation efforts that should be undertaken to improve their status and prevent further decline. As a result of the present assessment one species was considered regionally extinct (RE), eight were classified as critically endangered (CR), seven as endangered(EN) and 31 as vulnerable (VU). According to our assessment ten species can be treated as near threatened (NT). Due to the lack of sufficient data ten species were classified in data deficient category (DD).

Data Records

The data in this checklist resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 1,154 records. 1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

  • Taxon (core)
    1154
  • Distribution
    1154

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Geographic Coverage

The present assessment is focused on mainland Iceland as well as all smaller islands (e.g. Grímsey, Hrísey etc.), island archipelagos (Vestmannaeyjar archipelago) and small islets (e.g. numerous small islets in Breiðafjörður) being in close proximity to Iceland and thus closely connected biogeographically.
